Absolutely Family: A Guide to Editing and Publishing a Family Newsletter
by Jeanne Rundquist Nelson

copyright 1999.  Family Times Publishing. ISBN: 0-9671426-0-1

DearREADERS,

The mail from Kansas City brought this pocket-sized guide, filled to the brim with neat ideas to encourage even those of us who are just thinking about creating a family newsletter. With Jeanne to cheer us on, we simply can't fail!

She recalls "...when I was a child ...sitting around my grandmother's large dining room table after a satisfying meal and listening to the older folks telling stories about bygone days. They were joking and laughing until tears streamed down their faces." p 3.

Such family get-togethers are (unfortunately) few and far between. "The distances between us are just too great. Our family newsletter has managed to help fill that void a little."

Anyone who can put their own work up for critical discussion is OK in my book! Supplying both good and better examples of pages from her own newsletter, the author provides insight on the following topics:

  • Just Do It! The Time to Start is Now

  • Now & Then: Appeal to All Ages and Interests

  • Involvement: The Key to a Successful Publication

  • Nuts & Bolts: Organizing to Get the Job Done

  • Visual Appeal: Meriting a Second Look

  • Humor: The Family That Laughs Together...

  • Your Ethnic Heritage: Connecting with Your Roots

  • The Bottom Line: Containing Costs

  • Fun Features: Variety is the Spice of Life

  • Evaluation: Keeping in Touch with Your Readership

  • Thanks: Credit Where Credit is Due

  • Appendix I: Questions to Help Get At Those Details

  • Appendix II: Things I Have Learned...

  • Appendix III: Themes to Give Focus to Your Newsletter

  • Appendix IV: Other Ideas

  • Annotated Resources

If you are questioning the possibility of beginning a newsletter, have just inherited the responsibilities for an existing one, or would like a boost on your current project -- ABSOLUTELY FAMILY is just the shot in the arm we need to get motivated!
