We meet for the last time in 2018 and discuss MyHeritageDNA, the connection issues between Ancestry’s 2-step verification process and had not considered the API with RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker genealogy desktop software, Ghosts of Christmas Past (from FindMyPast) and our friend Anna Mathews reports on Helmut Film Scanner app we mentioned briefly last week. THANK-YOU, Anna. 🙂

10:08:42 From Cathy Naborowski : I have
10:08:48 From Joanne Parkes : From Ancestry
10:08:56 From Janet Iles : uploaded it recently
10:09:03 From Pamela Wells : Ditto
10:09:21 From Danine Cozzens : I uploaded mine too
10:09:23 From Valerie Lisk : I have mine and my family’s.
10:09:27 From Cousin Russ : Frances – do you have a question ?
10:09:45 From Frances Stein : Took test with Ancestry. Uploaded raw data to GedMatch and MyHeritage.
10:10:08 From Joanne Parkes : Have found individuals with DNA matches who have more information about my direct ancestors and shared it — information that I’d never seen before.
10:10:54 From Pamela Wells : Joan, I have had the same experience.
10:11:44 From Sue Burns to All panelists : I uploaded both Ancestry and Living DNA to My Heritage.
10:12:01 From Kathy Greenwald to All panelists : I uploaded my Mother’s Ancestry (showed accurate descendancy–total Scandinavian/English/Swiss) info into MyHeritage. Large African and Nigerian percentages showed up–totally inaccurate.
10:13:44 From DearMYRTLE: Family Tree Maker
10:14:04 From Cousin Russ : RootsMagic
10:14:11 From DearMYRTLE  :
10:15:15 From Doris Haskell : That raises a question. I have more than one tree on Legacy. Does anyone have more than one tree on RootsMagic?
10:15:23 From DearMYRTLE . RootsMagic 2018 Holiday OIffer –
10:15:49 From Frances Stein : It might have been less stressful for RM users if Bruce and his team announced the issues on that little screen that appears when you open RM. Just sayin’
10:16:43 From Genea-Santa : I asked my cousin Laura, whose mother is my 2nd closest match, to send me her raw data and I uploaded it to MyHeritage so I could see which segments we match on – we can identify the Richmond segments this way.
10:16:57 From Frances Stein : to Doris – yes, I have many trees on RM – I do not use TreeShare on any, though…
10:17:42 From Genea-Santa : Doris, I have many trees on RM, and have TreeSynced several of them with Ancestry.
10:18:07 From Doris Haskell : Thank you, Frances. You have the same name as my grandmother. And, our newest grand baby is Francesca.

10:19:20 From June Butka : I find MyHeritage for both my brother and myself was not much different than Ancestry. I also have many helpful information. I was one of the first to upload when allowed.
10:20:04 From Genea-Santa : Frances, it was a surprise to RootsMagic (I think) on Saturday morning. RM will have to do some programming to adapt to the two-step verification when they get the revised API that handles the verification process
10:20:47 From Genea-Santa : RootsMagic 8 will be announced in February 2019 – just in time for RootsTech!
10:20:56 From Doris Haskell : My husband has been using Personal Historian for several years now. I just bought it for myself this year, but haven’t used it much.
10:22:12 From Genea-Santa : The new devices are almost idiot proof!
10:22:42 From Doris Haskell : We’re not getting old. We’ve just been using computers for almost 40 years.
10:22:45 From John Laws to All panelists : Remember 3″ diskettes 64k each side
10:22:46 From cyndy Bray : Remember the 5 1/4 inch floppy?
10:23:22 From Frances Stein : to Genea-Santa…aka Randy…there were so many folks on the FB RM Users Group mentioning the difficulties, that was what I was referring to…
10:23:39 From Anna Matthews to All panelists : Yes, I played with it a bit when it first came out, a lot of fun.
10:23:53 From grahamwalter : NYC Maps – nice!
10:24:05 From June Butka : That is an awesome photo glimpse into our ancestors life. OldNYC.
10:24:14 From Genea-Santa : Frances – my guess is that Bruce was busy on Saturday morning and missed all the early excitement.
10:24:21 From Frances Stein : Would love to see photos of where my family lived in that time.
10:24:41 From Cousin Russ :
10:26:23 From Susan Ennis to All panelists : Great sites!
10:26:56 From Doris Haskell to All panelists : It’s interesting, because churches were an important part of town/city development. I think they built churches before libraries, in many cases.
10:28:42 From Doris Haskell : No fluorescent lights. You could read for hours!
10:29:57 From grahamwalter : I do
10:30:34 From Danine Cozzens : I do! Even if they lived before postcards, sometimes you see the lay of the land, as it were.
10:31:09 From June Butka : Old providence send an email verification from Maureen Talor
10:31:10 From Janine Edmée Hakim : I do…historical post cards with images of bygone historic buildings. and those sent to/from by our town’s common ancestors
10:32:48 From Anna Matthews : I’ve purchased cards of my grandfather’s boarding school because it had a photo of the clock tower which he had to maintain every week as part of his scholarship and the factory where my great-grandfather worked.

10:37:50 From grahamwalter :
10:38:18 From Cousin Russ : I have I have a link to eBay image
10:38:34 From Linda Stufflebean : I’ve built a collection of vintage postcards related to places where my family lived. My favorite is the one of my Stuart family’s cottage on Meddybemps Lake in Maine. The family is actually in the photo, c1910.
10:40:35 From JoAnn Lawrencw : ftI have copies of postcards and pictures of the orphanage my mother was in in 1930s & 1940s.
10:40:46 From grahamwalter : I got mine a few years ago
10:40:50 From grahamwalter : £5
10:40:52 From grahamwalter : 🙂
10:41:05 From grahamwalter : indeed
10:41:13 From grahamwalter : theyep
10:41:27 From Hilary Gadsby : I identified a place in a photograph when I visited the village where my father was born. I have some of my Mother’s postcards she kept in the photo album.
10:42:26 From Nancy Chouteau to All panelists : I too have a collection of vintage cards from places my ancestors lived. I have mostly churches and public buldings my ancestors would/may have used (courthouses, libraries, etc.)
10:42:31 From Danine Cozzens : Downtown Sonora CA in 1990s — the Patrick family store in 1850s was now the parking lot for the 7/11, but across the street, the store operated by other relatives was still there as a Christmas shop.

10:45:23 From Doris Haskell : We have a ceramic Christmas tree that was made for us many years ago by my mother-in-law. We don’t know who will inherit it.
10:46:31 From Cousin Russ :

10:47:34 From Cousin Russ :

10:48:01 From Anna Matthews : I did a little playing around with the Helmut Film Scanner app that was shared last week. I wasn’t sure I could watch today, so I did a blog post which has a few scans. Short answer – results were mixed:

10:48:07 From Cousin Russ : Scan-a-Thon: Register now for our first annual photo and document scanning marathon: January 11-14, 2019.
10:50:19 From DearMYRTLE . to All panelists : Guild of One Name Studies

11:14:42 From Hilary Gadsby : I got a match show up in Were Related to Melinda but the top 2 generations don’t match
11:14:54 From Pamela Wells : In the We’re Related app, I have Pat Richley, Russ Worthington, and Blaine Bettinger in my list of relatives…..anyone have me? Pamela Roberson Wells
11:16:42 From June Butka : I would say I have more likely than unlikely paper trail We’re Related hints. Many are second marriage hints.
11:16:46 From Jenny Hawran : Randy and I are 8th cousins 1x removed on We’re Related 🙂
11:17:20 From sherry vachio to All panelists : bso … saw this pop up here, and it’s in my son-in-law’s tree, as 10th ggrandfather: Name
Meinert Doedes
1621 – Reusel-de Mierden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands
13 December 1677 – Christchurch, Middlesex County, Virginia, United States of America
11:17:50 From Jenny Hawran : And Dave Robison the same. 8th Cousin 1x removed.

11:19:01 From June Butka : I have many hints that are not my family tree that the hints came from. I use a photo for direct line saying tre unreview.
11:19:19 From Genea-Santa : My common ancestor to Jenny Hawran is Sarah Burt (1654-1727) wife of Joseph Hartshorn (1652-1727).

11:20:34 From June Butka : My DNA hints are different from my We’re related are different.
11:20:51 From Joyce Westphal to All panelists : I have so many that are NOT probably related because so many of the names from my German ancestors are the same. The DNA, however, has brought me 2 cousins on my father’s side and I was able to let them know the stories related to their grandmothers.
11:21:03 From Pamela Wells : If you look at the FAQ on the We’re Related App you will find answers as to how the app works
11:24:46 From Pamela Wells : The FAQ says that for now the app only handles simple trees. Direct parents and only thorough 4 generations. More complex tree viewing my be available at a later date.
11:25:22 From Cousin Russ to All panelists : I can’t mute Johns Video today, for some reason. He is asleep
11:28:54 From Pamela Wells : Is John Laws ok? Check him out on the screen.
11:29:18 From Cousin Russ to All panelists : Pam – yes
11:29:37 From Doris Haskell : Sometimes he takes a little snooze. He tries to remember to turn off his video.
