REGISTER: DearMYRTLE Webinars – April 2018

DearFRIENDS,
Finally the weather in the northern hemisphere is turning warmer while our friends in the southern hemisphere are experiencing a break from the devastating heat of the past months. With this new month, exciting things are coming down the pike in DearMYRTLE’s webinar schedule.

Tony Proctor, our man in Ireland, has he developed a webinar dedicated to figuring out how to cite a document image on a website where static (always there) URLs are non-existent. Register now for his webinar titled BREADCRUMBS & SOURCES: How to cook better citations for problematic websites. Its coming up on Wednesday, 4 Apr 2018.

We’re also looking forward to Carol Kostakos Petranek’s two-part GreekGen Study GroupPerhaps you know her as the co-director of the Washington, DC Family History Center (in Kensington, Maryland). She also serves as a Citizen Archivist at the National Archives (US) and in the FamilySearch digitization project at the Maryland State Archives. Join us Wednesday, 11 & 18 Apr 2018 at Noon Eastern.

ARCHIVED: Genealogy Game Night – 10 March 2018

We’re playing Cousin Russ’ “Who’s In My Line?” where a panelist posts a challenge about an ancestor, and the panelists try to guess with no more than 20 incorrect answers. We trust the attendees to come up with some suggestions.

Originally we thought Game Night would make it less stressful for people to try coming up on the panel, testing out their headset earphones and mic. What’s emerged is a fun way to think outside the ‘fill in the blank’ boxes our genealogy software encourages.

ARCHIVED: Genealogy Game Night 13 Jan 2018

DearMYRTLE's Profile Pic

We gather once a month to have fun spotlighting ancestors as we play Cousin Russ’ Who’s in My Line? It give us another way to think about our ancestors. And we have a chance to practice using this new Zoom webinar technology with our headsets, mics and webcams.

This certainly has Ol’ Myrt here thinking about how to share stories of my ancestors with my family.

Panelist Shelley Murphy told us about her WWII flying hero Calvin Clark Davis whose honorable service is isted in African American at War: An Encyclopedia. See also her post titled “ I don’t think I‘ve done enough” Thinking of Calvin C. Davis-WW2.

Yvonne Demoskoff  told us about life for her French-speaking maternal grandfather, Eugene DesGrosseilliers, who was in law enforcement in the small town of Hearst in northern Ontario.

We struggled to guess the occupation of Anna Matthews‘ ancestor Arthur Matthews who sold instruments in Pittston, Pennsylvania. Cousin Russ managed to find a picture of the music store in question. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittston,_Pennsylvania#/media/File:Pittston,_Pennsylvania.jpg

Prizes were awarded to Shelley Murphy and Justine Leicht – a copy of Albion’s Seed: Four British Folkways in America by David Hackett Fischer.
